The Geraldton Boardriders Club have debuted in emphatic style at the sixth event of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle, claiming victory in small and windswept conditions at Trigg Point today. Eight of the Western Australia’s best boardriding clubs converged along Perth’s metropolitan beaches, participating in a unique and exciting competition format that provided non-stop action and high performance surfing. A talent-stacked field of current, former and aspiring WA surfing champions revelled in the opportunity to represent their local boardriding club and fly the flag for grass roots surfing in Australia. Despite the small summer-like conditions, Duke Nagtzaam (Yallingup), Kerry Whitford (Trigg Point), Cyrus Cox (Cowaramup Bay), Jerome Forrest (Margaret River), Connor Brown (Scarborough), Zak Alexander (Mandurah) and Kash Cook (Contacio) were amongst today’s best performers. However, top honours were reserved for Geraldton’s Max Marsden, who proved to be the standout surfer of the event. Marsden’s lightening fast and powerful forehand attack proved fatal, as he posted excellent scores with ease. “This is Gero’s first time competing here at this event,” said Marsden. “We’re used to the windy afternoon conditions in Geraldton and I thought the waves were kinda pumping for Perth.” The day’s action peaked during a closely fought and tightly contested teams final, which showed the depth of the WA clubs competing. Combining the best two scores from each club’s five best surfers, the 60 minute teams final proved to be hotter than the sand on the beach. The combination of Max Marsden, Erica Trotter, Josh Stanton, Deon Hagan, and Jesse Molloy posted a combined total of 49.17, thrusting Geraldton to the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of the event. In what was a nail-bitting finish to the day, Trigg Point finished on a combined total of 49.06, Yallingup Boardriders on 42.97 and Cowaramup Bay on 32.19. “Everyone was ripping,” said Marsden, who was presented with the Milwaukee Heavy Duty Hack award for his amazing combination of style and power throughout the event. “We can’t wait to take this felling home and share the win with the whole GBR community.” Geraldton have now qualified to represent WA and compete against the best boardrding clubs in the county at the nudie Australian Boardriding Battle National Final, scheduled to take place in NSW in February 2017. There’s $160,000 cash and prizes up for grabs for clubs across the National series including $24,000 prize money split between the 8 State events and $85,500 prize money across the National Final with the winning boardriders taking home a huge $20,000 and an overseas trip for 6 surfers from the winning club thanks to World Surfaris valued at $30,000. To top things off, there’s an additional $20,000 in prizes across the series. The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle is officially sanctioned by the World Surf League (WSL), which allows Australian WSL Championship Tour surfers (men and women) the opportunity to represent their local boardriders club at respective state qualifying events and the national final. The purpose of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle program is to build the profile and capacity of community boardriders clubs Australia-wide. Over the next three years, more than $450,000 will be invested into grassroots clubs through the partnership. nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Final Results – WA: Winner: Geraldton Boardriders on 5700 points 2nd Place: – Yallingup Boardriders on 5350 points 3rd Place – Trigg Point Boardriders on 4830 points 4th Place – Cowaramup Bay Boardriders on 4062 points 5th Place – Margaret River Boardriders on 3874 points 6th Place – Scarborough Boardriders on 3762 points 7th Place – Mandurah Boardriders on 3674 points 8th Place – Contacio Boardriders on 3362 points Major sponsors of the 2016/17 series include the naming rights partner nudie and supporting sponsors Toyota, Oakley, Nikon, Milwaukee, Destination NSW, DrinkWise, World Surfaris, Fox Sports, World Surf League,, XXXX Summer Bright Lager and Surfing Australia.
