Burleigh Boardriders take out the 2016 Queensland Nudie Australian Boardriders Battle on the Gold Coast

burkeighGold Coast, Queensland Saturday 5th November, 2016 – A star-studded line-up consisting of Queensland’s best Boardriders Clubs converged at The Spit for the hotly contested Nudie Australian Boardriders Battle where teams were met with clean, 2-3ft contestable A-Frames at the northern end of the Gold Coast.
Opening rounds of competition saw current WSL Men’s World Tour Surfer Joel ‘Parko’ Parkinson compete for Snapper Rocks Surfriders in the unique skins format and despite bring a wealth of skills and knowledge to the table, it was ‘Parko’ left chasing a score behind Burleigh Boardriders Thomas Woods who was considered the most outstanding performer throughout the whole competition.
Woods then went on to not only scoring the highest single wave score of the event (9.27 out of a possible 10) but also winning all 5 skins heats giving his club (Burleigh Boardriders) an early lead on the event with his clean sweep finish.
It wasn’t until later in the day that Burleigh Boardriders were given a run for their money in the team’s event with last year’s State Champions, Point Lookout Boardriders and former Series Champions, Snapper Rock Surfriders were biting back to even up the team’s cumulative points.
From Point Lookout Boardriders it was nominated ‘Powere Surfer’ Tim Macdonald who put his team firmly in second position and from Snapper Rocks Surfriders it was Reef Doig also nipping at the heals of both clubs for the all important first place position.
As the team’s fields narrowed, it was Burleigh Boardriders, Point Lookout Boardriders, Snapper Rocks Surfriders and D’bah Boardriders who mate it to the coveted state round final but with no guarantee that their spot in the final would secure their team a coveted spot in the national final, competition right to the dying seconds remained fierce.
In the end it was Burleigh Boardriders who defeated their fellow finalists finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
All four teams not only take home a slice at the $5k prize purse but also secure themselves a spot in the coveted Nudie Australian Boardriders National Final where they will match up to another 16 teams from all corners of Australia.
Heavy duty Milwaukee Hack winner went to none other the North Shore’s Jack Reginato after displaying the ‘Hack’ of the event and takes home a heavy duty Milwaukee Drill.
The coveted Nudie Australian Boardriders Battle has seen the likes of current World Tour Competitors compete in the Queensland leg of the series including Bede Durbidge (Point Lookout), Dimity Stoyle (North Shore), Mick Fanning (Kirra) and Stephanie Gilmore (Snapper Rocks).
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series will involve more than 100 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs in eight state qualifying rounds and will culminate in a National final in NSW in February 2017 for 24 clubs.
There’s $160,000 cash and prizes up for grabs for clubs across the National series including $24,000 prize money split between the 8 State events and $85,500 prize money across the National Final with the winning boardriders taking home a huge $20,000 and an overseas trip for 6 surfers from the winning club thanks to World Surfaris valued at $30,000. To top things off, there’s an additional $20,000 in prizes across the series.
